Sibu village to benefit from flood mitigation, community facilities

A FLOOD mitigation project, children’s playground and community garden are among projects finally being implemented in Kampung Usahajaya Baru in Salim, Sibu in Sarawak, according to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

He attributed delays in these Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) to the village previously being under another political party.

“When I was elected representative (in the Dec 18, 2021 state election), I made sure that proper development would take place here through RTP allocations,” he said at the “Bubur Lambuk and Date Fruit Distribution” programme in the village.

Chieng highlighted the construction of a multi-purpose hall equipped with a futsal court as well as an upgraded football field.

“This hall is one of my RTP projects for residents to relax and socialise while the football field, which is awaiting approval from the Sarawak Premier’s office, will include a large grandstand.

“In addition, we also have a gate project where the village development and security committee (JKKK) will create its own design before handing it over to the engineers involved,” he said.

Chieng hoped the projects, such as the flood mitigation, would be completed on schedule, but acknowledged that construction would inconvenience villagers.

“I hope residents will be patient with the effects of the building stage and hopefully, it will be completed on time.”

Chieng was speaking at the village where 300 containers of porridge and dates were handed out to Muslims for Ramadan.

This food distribution programme promoting interracial and interfaith harmony was organised by Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas).

“It is very important for us in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak, to practise racial harmony.

“We have many festivals that require us to understand each other, and celebrate each festival together through activities such as the distribution of bubur lambuk and dates,” said Chieng.

The assemblyman also voiced his aim for Saberkas’ Bukit Assek branch and community service centre to organise more activities with other races in the coming festive seasons.
