Public urged to be vigilant against causing forest fires at Broga Hill

The public has been urged to be vigilant and not carry out activities that may be a fire risk near Broga Hill in Semenyih, Selangor.

This includes disposal of cigarette butts and open burning activities, especially near the forested areas.

The Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin issued a statement on the matter, following a fire at the popular hiking trail on March 17, as the cause of the tragedy was still under investigation.

She said 28 officers from the fire and rescue department were involved in the fire-fighting operations.

"The officers responded within 15 minutes after a distress call at 7.39pm.

"The fire was put out by 2.30am and the operation was concluded by 3.30am, covering an area measuring 2ha.

"The operation took about eight hours. One of the contributing factors to the long hours was the hot weather and strong winds.

"Access to the site was also challenging, as the officers had to hike up for about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the site.

"Due to the lack of water supply, the fire was put out using the fire beater technique.

"The objective was to prevent the fire from spreading and to protect the environmental ecosystem," she said.

She also said that no wildlife were injured or dead in the incident.

The Selangor Forestry Department has closed public access to Broga Hill until further notice.
