Assemblyman funds park for Sibu residents

AFTER years of waiting, residents of Jalan Kiong Tung in Sibu and the surrounding areas finally have a community park.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said several thousand residents had previously requested the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to build a community park for them.

“However, due to financial constraints, the council could not do it.

“During the 2021 state election, I promised them that if I got elected, I would look into their request,” he said when launching the park called Kiong Tung Community Park.

Also present were SMC chairman Clarence Ting and his deputy Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.

Chieng said he spent RM100,000 of his Rural Transformation Plan (RTP) funds to build the park that had a basketball court, two badminton courts and a walking path.

“The park can be used by residents to keep fit and lead a healthy lifestyle.

“They can come to exercise and interact.”

A similar amount would be used to add more facilities, he said, such as children’s playground equipment, exercise equipment for senior citizens and a jogging track.

“With these facilities, the park will be complete. I hope residents will help to take care of the park.”

Chieng said he would not instal lighting at the park.

“I don’t want to put up lighting as those who play basketball at night will be nuisance to fellow residents.” — By ANDY CHUA
