LUCK and prosperity dropped straight into the arms of some 200 needy residents in Rawang, Selangor, when they received Chinese New Year food baskets at the Taman Sri Hijau basketball court.

The food baskets handed out by Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) councillor Alice Choo, Selayang MP William Leong and Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat were meant to help the B40 community, the disabled and single mothers.

Choo said that to ensure the needy received some Chinese New Year cheer, she began contacting donors from her hospital bed where she had been warded for dengue.

To assess eligibility, Choo’s assistants visited recipients’ homes before including them on the list.

“We target those in the B40 community, the disabled and single mothers who are aged 60 and above as well as those earning below RM2,500,” she said.

Sponsored by FFM Bhd, the charity packs contained essentials such as cooking oil, flour, eggs, milk and biscuits.

Choo thanked FFM for sponsoring the food baskets.

She said the company had also previously sponsored 200 food baskets in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali celebrations last year.

To add to the festivities, mandarin oranges were also distributed.

“The cost of mandarin oranges was shared between the Zone 15 residents committee as well as three other donors, namely Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd, Melissa Tan of Getha Bedding and Ang Soon Beng of Sepang Gold Coast.

“I hope our effort is able to bring the recipients some cheer,” said Choo.

One of the recipients, housewife Lim Lee Ching, 56, said she was happy to receive the food basket.

“The items provided are useful for cooking,” she said.

Another beneficiary was airconditioner repairer Yin Fuk Choi, 65.

“The gift will benefit my disabled sister and me during this festive season,” he said.

After distributing the food baskets, Choo sent 20 sets to the Lekshmy Illam Nursing Home at New Green Park 2 in Rawang.
