Raising awareness of ewaste disposal

RAS UiTM SC organised a responsible ewaste disposal campaign in Semporna.

PERSATUAN Rakan Alam Sekitar Universiti Teknologi Mara Student Chapter (RAS UiTM SC), in collaboration with Sabah Environment Department through the Oceaners Assemble 2.0 Programme organised an electronic waste disposal campaign in Semporna, Sabah.

The programme was targetted at inculcating responsible management of ewaste.

Department director Amirul Aripin said the campaign received overwhelming response from various segments of the Semporna community, including residents and tourists.

Informative brochures were distributed around town and an ewaste management session was conducted for 48 pupils at SK Pulau Mabul.

Amirul said games with an ewaste theme and the distribution of toys, storybooks, religious books, soap and mosquito repellent were also conducted.

This is the second time that RAS UiTM SC ran an ewaste campaign on an island, following one on Pulau Perhentian in June last year, in which similar initiatives were undertaken.

During a discussion with village chiefs of Pulau Mabul, Muhamad Yusuf and Siti Jumba of Kampung Labuan Haji, they expressed appreciation for the ewaste awareness initiative.

SK Pulau Mabul headmaster Mansur Ureh urged pupils not to perpetuate negative practices like disposing of waste into the sea.

This programme marked RAS UiTM SC’s eighth successful ewaste campaign.
