Be proactive, Subang Jaya councillors told

Councillors and the 1,400 staffers and officers at Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) have been urged to be proactive and quickly lodge complaints if they spot problems around the city.

“I want everyone to get ahead of any complaints,” said Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.

“If a staffer notices a pothole in a road, he or she should lodge a complaint to get it fixed before the public does.

“We need to anticipate potential problems, as certain matters could go viral,” he highlighted.

He also hoped that MBSJ councillors would work closely with officers in carrying out the council’s policies, vision and mission.

Mohd Fauzi was speaking after the swearing-in ceremony of 23 councillors for the 2024-2025 term at MBSJ’s headquarters in USJ 5, Subang Jaya.

The line-up comprises six new faces and 17 reappointments.

Thirteen councillors are from DAP, six from PKR and four from Amanah. Only five are women while the rest are men.

The final councillor, a Barisan Nasional representative, would be named by the state government at a later time.

Balachandran Naicker, Tey Han Cherk, Suzanah Hanim Wong and Tey Boon Kiat are the new DAP councillors.

Gunasunthari Kanniappan and Saidin Awang are the new faces from PKR and Amanah respectively.

Those who were reappointed are Lee Jen Uyin, Thomas Low Yew Sin, Mehanatan Embamurthi, Chia Yew Ken, Thamilarusu Sandayan, Ng Seow Chen, Thong Kim Fatt, Mohd Tarmizi Lazim and Kamarul Hafiz Kamarudin (DAP), M. Anbarasan Murugesu, Sarawati Mukhtar, Pravin Murali, Tah Yap Keong and Parithi Vaanan Ramasamy (PKR), Kamarul Hisham Yeop Hashim, Muhammad Fauzan Rosli and Khairol Basri M. Arif (Amanah).

All councillors took their oaths and signed their letters of appointment in front of Mohd Fauzi and Subang Jaya deputy mayor Zulkurnain Che Ali.

After the ceremony, a meeting was convened to assign committees and zones to the councillors.

Balachandran said he would tap his background as a civil engineer and community leader to improve the city council’s functions and services.

The 70-year-old has worked in both the government and private sectors, and specialised in computer-aided engineering.

Balachandran said the appointment would give him direct access to the people carrying out technical work.

Gunasunthari, 43, said, “I am working as an administrative clerk at a finance service company and plan to juggle both roles for now”.

Boon Kiat, 29, who is an assistant to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, has a degree in Consumer Studies and has been active in NGO work.

“I hope to use these experiences for the development of markets, improving licensing matters and promoting the local arts and culture in Seri Kembangan.”
