SELANGOR St John’s Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) has officially relaunched its ambulance service in south central Selangor (KSTS).

The non-governmental organisation’s ambulance service, which resumed operations in November last year, covers areas that include Serdang, Bukit Jalil, Puchong and Subang Jaya.

SJAM deputy commander-in-chief Datuk Yeo Kim Thong said SJAM-KSTS ambulance service, which started in 2009, ceased operations in 2012 due to financial constraints.

SJAM-KSTS members had been trying to raise funds over the years, he said, and managed to get two ambulances last year to add to their one existing ambulance.

“However, there is only one emergency response team at the moment. We are looking at recruiting more staff to provide 24-hour service in the future.

“The ambulance service is free for emergency cases, but a nominal fee will be charged for non-emergency cases, which will help offset our operational costs,” Yeo said after the launch at SJAM-KSTS’s office in Jalan Puteri 4/1, Puchong.

The ambulance service is available on weekdays, from 9am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

The SJAM-KSTS emergency hotline number is 018-316 0610.

SJAM also provides first aid and ambulance standby services, as well as first aid courses for a fee.

Before the launch, Selangor SJAM conducted a mass casualty simulation exercise in Lebuh Puteri, Bandar Puteri Puchong, involving some 200 emergency responders.

Participants included SJAM staff and members, Fire and Rescue Department officers, traffic police, hospital staff and volunteers.

Several scenarios such as passengers trapped in a van, occupants trapped in an overturned vehicle and a burning car were played out to test the emergency responders’ coordination and skills in managing challenging situations.

Puchong MP Wong Chen was present to launch the simulation exercise.
