PERSATUAN Komuniti ELShaddai Kuala Lumpur members fed about 1,000 poor children and single mothers at its Miracle Chapel Mission Centre in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

People from all walks of life were feted at the grand luncheon by one of the oldest soup kitchens in the country.

This was made possible through the sponsorship of their patrons Puan Sri Betty Saw, Lexis Group of Hotels president Datuk Mandy Chew, GSI Group of Companies’ Datuk Robert and Datin Shelah Basker, Shenpen Malaysia, Philippines BTV and ELShaddai Co-Workers.

The children and single mothers were entertained with fun and laughter, as three Santa Clauses made their appearance. There were singing and dancing too.

In a statement, the soup kitchen founder Ivan Kennedy said the celebration showed that there were still people who loved and cared for the less fortunate.

“Each child received a party pack, schoolbag with RM20 ang pow and stationery. The single mothers received 10kg rice bags, rations and a RM50 ang pow.

“Everyone received a pack of chicken briyani cooked by the members,” he said, adding that it was “an honour to feed the less fortunate”.

Kennedy said their primary activity was the soup kitchen, which fed about 250 children and 250 single mothers every week.

“Back in 1915, the chapel members fed the poor with boiled tapioca and milk. During the Japanese Occupation, its members served rice, fresh cow’s milk and noodles. Now, it’s chicken briyani every week.”

They also run old folk’s homes and ELShaddai shelters and give dry rations to about 200 families every month, relying on public donation and profits from selling fruitcakes and cookies throughout the year to do so.

“We spend RM20,000 on our programmes and to run the homes. We will be grateful for donations in cash and kind,” he said.
