A NEW community college is set to be built in Pontian, Johor, and expected to be completed within the next three years, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The Pontian MP said the college would be constructed on a 3.2ha plot located just a few metres from Benut Penghulu Complex.

“We appealed to the government for the establishment of this college in 2020.

“A year later, the project was approved by former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“The project will cost about RM32mil.”

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the proposed site of the college in Benut, Pontian,

However, Ahmad said the date for the start of construction had yet to be decided.

“For now, we are in the midst of settling land matters.

“The land where the college will be built belongs to Education Ministry and we need to transfer it to the Higher Education Ministry first.

“The two ministries will be meeting soon to discuss the matter.

“I believe it will not be an issue as the Education Ministry has about 12ha of land here and we are asking for only 3.2ha.”

Ahmad said the college would offer courses on agriculture and agrotechnology.

“I hope the project can be completed in a timely manner and benefit the people of Pontian.

“Each parliamentary constituency in Johor is supposed to have a community college but Pontian is among the few constituencies that still do not have one.

“I am glad Pontian will be having a community college within three years,” he said.
