LAST year, 689 summonses were issued to students from two Petaling Jaya schools, said Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk S Sasikala Devi.
She said among the offences were driving without a valid licence, modified motorcycles, expired road tax as well as not using a helmet.
The offenders were students aged between 13 and 17.
“To address the issue, the police organised awareness programmes in relation to traffic and criminal offences via ‘Op Didik’ for school students,” she said at a Prihatin Driver’s Licence Programme for schoolchildren in the Petaling Jaya parliamentary constituency held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Taman Medan, reported Bernama.
She said the operation was an effort by the police to educate and enhance awareness among students about the importance of abiding by the law.
During the event, DCP Sasikala presented free learners’ driving licences to 100 students from SMK Taman Medan and SMK Taman Datuk Harun as well as children of the Petaling Jaya police headquarters’ (IPD) staff in an effort to ensure they had a valid motorcycle licence.
She said the granting of the licences was a pilot project, and a result of a collaboration involving the Petaling Jaya IPD, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, the Road Transport Department, the Petaling Utama district education office and Safety Driving Centre Sdn Bhd.
