TEN students were awarded scholarships totalling RM400,000 by Lion Group’s Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF).

The recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and B40 status.

They received their awards during a presentation ceremony at Lion Office Tower in Kuala Lumpur.

This is the 33rd year the foundation has awarded scholarships to deserving students.

The awards were presented by LPF chairman Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng.

Also present were LPF trustees Datuk CS Tang and Chow Mun Seong as well as the students’ family members.

The undergraduates, who are pursuing their first degrees at local institutions of higher education, received scholarships worth RM10,000 per annum for the duration of their studies.

Cheng hoped the funds would help students facing financial constraints.

“It will allow them to focus on their studies and participate in activities to develop leadership skills and more.”

Cheng added that the students would undergo several training by the Lion Group.

“They will learn problem-solving, communication and public speaking skills during semester breaks.

“The students will also be offered internships at Lion Group companies to prepare them for the corporate world.”

Upon graduation, they wouldbe given the opportunity to join the group and be attached to companies in the various divisions such as retail, branding, steel, mining, property development and services, aligning with their respective fields of study.

Cheng reminded the students to be cautious about their social media use.

She also spoke about Artificial Intelligence, adding that while it helped users in their work, there were concerns about over-relying on AI software such as ChatGPT.

Scholar Tayalan Ethaya Kumar, 19, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak said he was grateful for the foundation’s help in easing his family’s financial burden.

“I will use the funds for my daily expenses during my time at university.”

Another scholar, Adilles Gurang Jalak, 19, from Sarawak, said he found out about the scholarship through a social media group.

“I am happy to be selected for this scholarship as it eases my mind to know there is someone giving me financial aid.“This will definitely drive me to study hard,” said Adilles, who is pursuing his studies in Computer Science at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam, Selangor.

To date, LPF has sponsored 513 students through various sponsorship programmes worth RM12.7mil.
