THE Sultan Selangor’s Cup (TSSC), an annual friendly football match between Selangor and Singapore, will return after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In its 20th edition, the highly anticipated cup is scheduled for Aug 17, 2024 at Stadium Merdeka.

TSSC 2024 chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said the venue had significance to Malaysians, and was chosen by Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah since the usual arena, Shah Alam Stadium, was still being renovated.

Abd Karim said he hoped having TSSC at Stadium Merdeka would be nostalgic for Malaysians.

He added that many football legends like the late Datuk Mokhtar Dahari, Datuk Santokh Singh, Datuk Soh Chin Aun and the late Datuk Arumugam Rengasamy had played in the stadium.

“There will be a variety of activities, entertainment, performances as well as fireworks.

“I can assure you that we will deliver the best on that day,” he said, adding that the stadium could hold 20,000 spectators.

Aside from the main match, fans can also expect to see some veteran footballers in action.

Inaugurated by Sultan Sharafuddin in 2001, TSSC has taken place almost every year, aside from 2015 due to the haze and the last three years.

Selangor last lifted the cup in 2019 with a score of 1-0.

The state had nine wins against Singapore’s seven in 17 matches, with the exception of 2004 when both teams were crowned joint winners, tying at 2-2.

In the veteran category, Selangor won the head-to-head battle against Singapore by 8-4 in 17 meetings.

Both teams were the joint winners for five years, namely 2004, 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2017.
