MPS considering amending distance ruling for liquor sales at mixed schemes

SELAYANG Municipal Council (MPS) is considering amending guidelines on business premises selling liquor and other alcoholic beverages in the municipality.

This is specifically with regard to the outlets’ proximity to homes.

MPS president Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi said current guidelines required these business premises to be outside 300m radius of residential buildings as well as shophouses, government offices, schools, hospitals and places of worship.

However, this is causing problems for some business owners who wish to sell alcoholic beverages as their premises are located on mixed development properties.

“For instance, many housing schemes have service apartments and condominiums on the upper floors and commercial units on lower floors.

“Therefore, the Licensing Department has proposed to amend the guidelines to exempt supermarkets and shopping complexes from the minimum distance requirement, subject to approval of the residential premises’ joint management body,” he said at a full board meeting yesterday.

Mohd Yazid said MPS had rejected 10 licence applications as the business owners concerned could not adhere to the 300m distance rule.

Separately, MPS procured six high-tech drones worth RM135,195 to empower it to conduct monitoring and enforcement activities.

Mohd Yazid said the purchase was in line with the council’s effort to modernise its monitoring system, especially in investigating illegal dumping, public nuisance issues and unlicensed earthworks.
