Skudai residents currently have to go either to the markets in Taman Perling (pictured) or Taman Ungku Tun Aminah as there is no market in their area.

IN A few years’ time, Skudai residents will no longer have to go all the way to markets in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah and Taman Perling to shop.

Skudai Baru zone councillor Lim Soon Hai said work on Skudai Baru market located at Jalan Hang Lekir 1 would start in June 2024.

“The project is expected to be completed in about two years,” he said after the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) full board meeting at Menara MBIP in Medini Sentral, Iskandar Puteri.

Lim said enterprising residents would also be able to trade at the new market.

“A public market still plays an integral part of our society as it’s a meeting point for people from all walks of life.”

Lim said a 0.48ha parking area would be built next to the market, which would be located on a 0.44ha site.

He added that the project costing between RM4.5mil and RM4.6mil had been included under MBIP’s Budget 2024 and would start in 2025.

Project components, he said, included a walkway, jogging track, bicycle track, camping area, food truck lot, solar-powered lights, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and bridge connecting Taman Skudai Baru and Taman Damai Jaya.

“The vacant land for the river beautification project is now overgrown with bushes and shrubs and also becoming an illegal dumping site.”

The foliage would be cleared, he said, and the area would be fenced up to prevent lorries from entering and dumping rubbish there.

Lim said the land came under the jurisdiction of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), which had agreed to the river beautification project.

A 1.61ha piece of land at Jalan Melawati 1, Taman Melawati has also been identified as a carpark for the 40,000-seat capacity Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Gelang Patah.

“The new carpark will help reduce congestion at the stadium during a football match,” he said.

Lim added that MBIP would work closely with Pengangkutan Awam Johor (PAJ) to provide shuttle bus services to the stadium located about 1.5km from Jalan Melawati 1.

He said a 1.69ha piece of land, also at Jalan Hang Lekir 1, would be turned into a children’s playground and carpark for patients visiting Skudai Baru Health Clinic.
