THE two-hour parking limit is now enforced in 14 areas in Selayang, Selangor.

A total of 66 street parking bays have been painted with orange lines to alert motorists about the two-hour limit.

Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) deputy president Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi said that enforcement would be carried out by its parking operator, Suasa Efektif.

“The enforcers will ensure that motorists are aware of the new system and that the bays are not misused,” he said after chairing the council’s full board meeting.

He said the parking fee for bays with the two-hour limit was set at 50sen for every half hour.

Locations include Desa Jaya, Bandar Baru Selayang, Taman Sri Batu Caves, Selayang 18 and Sri Gombak.

Payment for parking can be made via Smart Selangor Parking, Flexi Parking, Jom Parking, Touch n’ Go eWallet and Setel.

MPS had first proposed the idea in August last year.

It then had to go through the process to gazette the amendment to the Road Transport Order (Parking Space Allocation) MPS 2007.

Several other local authorities in Selangor have also implemented the concept starting with Subang Jaya City Council in September last year, with Petaling Jaya City Council and Ampang and Klang municipal councils following suit.

On another matter, Adi Faizal informed that the council had stepped up its monitoring and infrastructure maintenance in preparation for heavy rain.

“We have carried out flood simulations and also have about 20 personnel on 24-hour standby.”

He added that MPS had identified hotspots for potential landslides and flooding including in areas like Bandar Baru Selayang, Sungai Pusu, Kampung Sungai Tua, Kuang and Kundang.

Evacuation shelters, typically community halls, could be quickly set up if needed, he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had forecast four to six incidents of heavy rainfall from next month that have the potential to cause floods.

This is due to the onset of the North-East Monsoon where higher-than-usual rainfall is expected from November until March.
