INSTILLING a love of reading in children at an early age allows them to grow their vocabulary skills and improve cognitive development and creativity.
To spark students’ interest in reading and foster life-long learning, Sunway International Schools (SIS) hosted its Elementary Book Week.
The event was packed with exciting activities, including bonfire night, teddy bear picnic, read-a-thon, daily reading sessions, students’ costume parade and book scavenger hunt.
One highlight was the bonfire night, which saw students cuddled up in warm blankets with snacks, enjoying and singing along to a fun story-telling session.
The teddy bear picnic for elementary students featured a lunch with their favourite snacks and soft toys.
These activities created a fun “outside of the classroom” environment which allowed the students to fully relax and enjoy their reading time.
To add a sprinkle of magic, SIS principal Brett Syer and vice-principal Michael Owen made a surprise visit to the event, appearing as “Thing One” and “Thing Two” from Dr Seuss.
The adventure was accompanied by a story-telling session where students had the opportunity to pick the story of their choice.
SIS also adopted the Drop Everything and Read (Dear) concept from Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary, who wrote the Ramona series.
Dear encourages individuals to set aside some time and drop all distractions to enjoy reading, an important step in building healthy reading habits among students.
The Elementary Book Week was wrapped up with a colourful parade, featuring students in their favourite costumes.
