MBPJ waives entertainment tax for stage performances involving local artistes

PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will waive entertainment tax for stage performances by local artistes, including non-ticketed live band performances, following a circular by the Selangor government.

Deputy mayor Aznan Hassan announced this at its full board meeting and said the ruling would take effect from Jan 1 to Dec 31 next year.

He said the entertainment tax would be increased from RM150 to RM155 for international performances starting January 2025.

In Budget 2024, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said local artistes would get full entertainment tax exemption in the Federal Territories.

Aznan later launched a business licence printing machine that would enable traders to renew their licences up to 9pm.

He said this was in line with Selangor’s aspiration to go digital.

The machines will be in eight locations namely MBPJ headquarters, Menara MBPJ, MBPJ drive-thru kiosk, MBPJ Kota Damansara branch, Pasar Besar Jalan Othman, Pasar Taman Megah, Pasar PJKita at Sri Damansara, and Gerai Atria DJ SS22.

All kiosks are open from 7.30am to 9pm except MBPJ Kota Damansara branch which is open from 8am to 4pm.

“This year, there are 34,340 licensed business owners registered in Petaling Jaya, comprising 29,064 business licensees and 5,276 micro entrepreneurs,” said Aznan.

Up to October, there was an increase in online business licence renewals by 67.5% compared to 2021.

“There were 6,474 online business licence renewals in 2021, 9,342 in 2022 and 11,788 transactions this year,” he said.

Aside from licence renewals, other transactions such as assessment tax, compound and hall rental payments can be done at the kiosks.

Meanwhile, Aznan, 58, who joined the council in 1991, said he received his appointment letter as deputy mayor on Oct 23.

“I never expected to go up the ranks to deputy mayor but I will do my best,” he said.
