WORLD champion violinist Imran Azim Iskandar shows how excelling at one’s hobby can pave the way to a potential career.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said youths should be inspired by Imran to excel either in their studies or in their other interests.

"Success sometimes starts when you are good in your hobby,” said Chieng during the presentation of a RM2,000 incentive award to Imran for his achievement.

The Form Five student from SMK Bukit Assek in Sibu, Sarawak, emerged the violin champion in the classical category of the World Championship of Performing Arts in Anaheim, California, USA.

He also took home a silver medal each in the contemporary and original works categories as well as a bronze medal each in the jazz and open categories.

Chieng said, “I am very proud of Imran as he is a student in my constituency.

“We can tell there are many untapped talents in our midst and I hope Imran's achievements can motivate us all."

Imran said his achievement was not only for him and his family but for his school, state and country.

“I hope you will take me as your model to be a better person and a good citizen of the country,” he told the more than 500 students at the ceremony. — By ANDY CHUA
