Construction of school for Sibu’s B40 students starts year-end

Roland: The international school will be completed in two years.

WORK on the proposed Yayasan Sarawak International School in Sibu is expected to begin this year.

“We should be able to start work by the end of this year and complete it in two years, similar to the one in Semenggoh,” said state Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, after opening the Dual-Language Programme (DLP) Sarawak Level 2 training programme.

The project, located at the site of the old airport runway, was initially scheduled to start in 2020 but was put on hold because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The school is to be built for B40 group students, who will enjoy free enrolment.

It will be able to cater to 500 students, 80% of whom will be from the B40 group.

Sarawak government has also set aside a 20% quota for the non-B40 group who will pay school fees.

Sagah said constructing new schools for this purpose would not be cheap.

“It will cost more than RM50mil but priority should be given to repairing dilapidated schools, as it will be cheaper.”

On DLP Sarawak, which is in its fourth year of implementation, he said the state government would continue its commitment to provide financial support.

“Sarawak has provided teaching and learning resources to all primary schools implementing DLP Sarawak.

“The resources provided include National Geographic learning materials, a teacher guide book and a student activity book,” he said.

DLP Sarawak is a programme for schools to implement teaching and learning of science and mathematics conducted fully in English.

The programme is implemented to realise Sarawak government’s aspirations and strategy to drive the state’s economy and achieve developed status by 2030.
