UOW Malaysia University Colleges and Colleges board of governors has a new chairman with the appointment of Datuk Mohammad Medan Abdullah.

The appointment was confirmed by the UOW Malaysia board on Aug 15 and is for a two-year term.

He began serving as a member of the board of governors from June 15, 2022.

Mohammad Medan began his career in petroleum giant PETRONAS and has chalked up more than 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, spanning the entire value chain from upstream to downstream, marketing and trading.

He was formerly managing director/president (Asia-Pacific) of Gazprom Marketing and Trading Pte Ltd Singapore, deemed the largest gas company in the world.

He also helmed Bintulu Port Holdings Sdn Bhd from 2016 to 2023 as the group chief executive officer.

Mohammad Medan, who is from the Kelabit Highlands of Bario, Sarawak, studied law at Universiti Malaya and Advanced Management Programme at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

In 2017, the Malaysian Institute of Management inducted him to the Court of Emeritus Fellows, an accolade granted to individuals who have provided distinguished leadership and management not only for their organisations but across the industry.

For his exemplary work with Bintulu Port, he was honoured in 2022 as one of Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives by the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability (ACES) Awards.

Mohammad Medan had also previously served as a member of the Education Ministry’s Education Advisory Council from 2014 to 2016.

In a statement, UOW Malaysia Sdn Bhd board of directors chairman Noel Cornish said, “I am delighted with the appointment of Mohammad Medan as (board of governors) chairman.

“With his vast knowledge, experience and networks in various Malaysian industries and corporate boardrooms, I have no doubt that he will bring to the chairmanship the insights and acumen needed to help UOW Malaysia navigate through the challenges of the higher education ecosystem in Malaysia.”

Jennifer Ng, UOW Malaysia chief executive officer and UOW Global Enterprises chief executive officer (Asia), also welcomed Mohammad Medan’s appointment.

She believes he will play a pivotal role in bringing about lasting and significant development for the UOW Malaysia entities.
