TO CELEBRATE Olympic Day, Taman Tun Dr Ismail Residents Association (TTDIRA) organised a “Let’s Move” event in collaboration with Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

Aimed at children aged seven to 15 years, the event was held at Taman Rimba Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, to encourage an active lifestyle and spirit of volunteerism among the local community.

OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, who was the guest of honour, said it was a welcome initiative to create healthier individuals and stronger societies.

“Today, I see all levels of society, regardless of background, religion and race, united through sports and I think that is something that should be commended.

“The community at ground level is where things start and we must continue striving for unity through our actions and especially through active participation in sports,” said Norza who is also Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president.

TTDIRA chairman Brian Chin said the spirit of volunteerism was a driving factor in organising the event.

“We hosted this event with certified coaches, but also have volunteers and parents so there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

“Being the first residents’ association to work with OCM is very exciting, and seeing everyone come together is very fulfilling,” said Chin.

The event saw 60 children taking part in seven different activities.

They competed in six groups against each other and had fun moving around the park.

TTDI resident Joshua Chin said he was encouraged after seeing the children having so much fun.

“At first they didn’t really know each other and were shy, but after running around they started to come out of their shells and cheer each other on.

“We saw how sports could truly break all barriers,” he added.

Volunteer Yam Cher Seng noted that many children lacked sufficient physical activity.

“This event is a great success in drawing both children and parents to come together to enjoy the public space,” said Yam.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who is also Segambut MP, was represented at the event by her political secretary Yap Yee Vonne.

Yap noted the park was a special place to many in the TTDI community.

“This park is still here today because of the commitment of TTDI residents in protecting and preserving it at all costs.

“It was a seven-year battle to save Taman Rimba Kiara (from development), and for our children to use this park, knowing it will be preserved for generations to come is something to celebrate,” said Yap.

She added that the Segambut MP’s service centre was planning to organise sports programmes for senior citizens, such as swimming classes.

TTDIRA also received a RM10,000 donation from the Segambut MP’s service centre and RM5,000 from OCM.
