THE 2023 Belaga Regatta makes a comeback this year and is expected to draw in thousands of tourists and locals to Pekan Belaga, Sarawak.
The bi-annual event will take place from July 30 to Aug 6. It was last held in 2018
The Belaga Regatta’s main event is the rowing boat race that offers the King of the River prize of up to RM20,000, and RM10,000 for the open category besides several other categories that make up the total prize of RM163,000.
“This year is its seventh edition and everyone is eagerly awaiting this event,” said Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang, who is also Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Deputy Minister.
He said the side programmes would start on July 30, while the main events would be held from Aug 3 to 6 at Sungai Belaga Waterfront.
Liwan said this regatta would showcase the rich cultural heritage and uniqueness of the Orang Ulu culture in the Belaga district.
“The programme is also an opportunity for visitors from inside and outside Sarawak to visit the Belaga district, which is rich in culture and natural beauty,” he added.
Among other programmes are cultural performances, roadshows by government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), a fun run, stalls, traditional hut exhibition, speed boat race and a Rahmah sale.
The event is open to the public.
