FIFTY-FOUR traders at Jinjang Utara Morning Market have handed over a petition supporting Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) decision to standardise lot sizes in the area.

The petition was handed over to a representative from DBKL’s Licensing Department by morning market traders Alan Liau and On Wooi Teong on behalf of the signatories.

Jinjang Utara Morning Market does not have a hawker association.

On told reporters that the majority of traders who had their lots standardised wished to remain at their designated spots.

“We agree with the placement and arrangement of lots given to us by DBKL and we object to a reshuffle or any changes to the current arrangement,” she said.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng’s special assistant Dic Lai said the previous lot sizes of 18sq ft and 48sq ft were converted to 64sq ft following pavement and drainage upgrade works in front of the Jinjang Utara wet market.

“Upgrades to this portion of the Jinjang Utara Morning Market (located along a lane between Jalan Jinjang Aman and Jalan Jinjang Aman 1) were completed on June 20,” said Lai.

“This resulted in some morning market traders having to move further away from their original location to accommodate the larger lots, leading to some discontent with a number of traders requesting DBKL to reassign the lots.

“However, 54 out of 67 traders in this portion of the morning market are against this and have signed the petition requesting DBKL not to change lots already assigned to them.”

He said the portion of the morning market located along Jalan Jinjang Aman 1, which had over 100 traders, had been earmarked for upgrades expected to take place in 2024.

On unlicensed traders in the area, Lai said anyone other than owners found trading under a “rented” licence, such as a third party, would be reported to DBKL for action to be taken.

“We have not determined the exact number of traders who are doing this, but we have received reports that there are about four stalls with rented licences.”

Meanwhile, Lai said a portion of the newly upgraded lane which had sunken after heavy vehicles used it would be repaired soon.

“DBKL is aware and they will be carrying out repairs by removing the interlocking bricks and reinforcing the surface below.”
