PENANG is spending RM280,000 to build a volleyball court and two takraw chinlone (sepak raga tuju) courts in Taman Industri Dahlia, Butterworth.

State youth and sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said construction was expected to be completed on Aug 29.

“We built these courts upon requests from residents here, especially the youth, so that they no longer have to go to other places to play these games.

“Once the project is completed, we hope to unearth new talent and promote interest in volleyball and takraw chinlone,” Soon told state publisher Buletin Mutiara.

Also present was councillor for Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) Ng Yee Siang.

In another development, Soon said the state government has remained committed to providing recreational areas for Penangites.

He said Penang Stadium Corporation and Open Spaces (PSDKLPP) had undertaken a series of developments involving sports facilities in the state.

“PSDKLPP has established a football field per FIFA standards at Pokok Sena in Permatang Berangan.

“Similarly, a running track and football field at a sports complex in Jalan Betek, Bukit Mertajam, have also been upgraded.

“There are a few other projects under PSDKLPP which will be completed this year.

“They are the Seberang Jaya public swimming pool, WoodHaven forest park and Nibong Tebal Arena,” he said.during the handover of the field in Taman Supreme to MBSP.

The upgrading works cost RM290,000 and was completed on Dec 13 last year.

Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy, who is also Prai assemblyman, expressed his

gratitude.

“The field will benefit the

community in the area. I hope PSDKLPP will continue with its efforts to increase the quality of sports facilities in the state,” he said.

Also present were PSDKLPP executive director Rashidah Jalaludin and MBSP Landscape Department head Shaqhrony

Md Yusoff.
