THE Penang Hill funicular service will be shut down for scheduled maintenance from June 15 to 23.

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said the second bi-annual maintenance would be conducted under the supervision of engineers from the funicular’s manufacturer, Garaventa AG of Switzerland.

It said the temporary shutdown would be carried out twice, once in the beginning of the year and the other mid-year.

“PHC conducts regular checks and maintenance of its funicular system on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as well as routine inspections that are carried out after operating hours.

“This is to ensure that the funicular system is always in tip-top condition and meets stringent safety compliance checks,” it said in a media statement.

During the shutdown, visitors may opt for the Jeep service operated by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association (012-454 1255) located at Rifle Club Car Park (Penang Botanic Gardens), or use the existing hiking routes to reach the summit of Penang Hill.
