NOTED social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye is hopeful that his life story will help motivate more young Malaysians to contribute to the betterment of the nation.

Lee, 77, himself began to serve his constituents and the nation when he was 23 years old.

“With Malaysia facing a very challenging time, it is crucial that more people step forward to embrace volunteerism and contribute in whatever way possible for the good of the nation,” Lee said during the book-signing session for Call Lee Lam Thye – Recalling a Lifetime of Service in SibuJaya, Sarawak.

The book was launched in June 2022 and Lee is currently promoting it in Sibu.

Calling on all Malaysians, especially the younger generation, to do their part for the nation, Lee said our selfish desires would be the only thing preventing us from making a contribution.

“There is no cause that is nobler than serving the people and the nation with commitment and integrity,” he said.

Born in Ipoh in 1946, Lee has been a prominent figure in Malaysian society for more than 50 years.

He was initially a unionist advocating for the rights of workers before becoming a politician serving as a state assemblyman and MP for well over 20 years.

Throughout his life he has been a strong advocate for social causes, speaking out against corruption and injustice.

He is also an ardent advocate for integrity, safety and health, having served the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation for almost 30 years.

An often-told fact of Lee’s dedication to public service started when, as a young politician, he would carry a portable typewriter to provide service to the people wherever he was needed.

It was widely reported that his letterhead and signature carried weight with the local authorities, who would seriously take his recommendations for flood victims, housing, hawker licences and other issues of those in dire need.

This biography provides an in-depth look at Lee’s journey from a young activist to a parliamentarian and a respected leader in the fields of community service, crime prevention and safety and health at work.

Call Lee Lam Thye – Recalling a Lifetime of Service is available for purchase. For details, call Yap Khean Ann at 012-201 2587.
