THE Penang Girl Guides Association plans to enrol more preschoolers in its new Pandu Puteri Kelip-Kelip (Firefly Guides) this year.

Its chief commissioner Datuk Chan Kit Sin said the Kelip-Kelip troop, which is for girls aged four to eight, was formed last year with only three kindergartens enrolling their pupils.

“We have explained the activities planned to the parents for them to encourage their little ones to join,” she said at the Girl Guides Big Gathering for Guiders 2023 at the association’s premises in Jalan Ayer Itam, Penang.

Chan is thankful that Pandu Puteri Kelip-Kelip has the support of the state Education Department.

“We look forward to introducing this unit to all 56 preschools in the state this year.”

Chan pointed out that the gathering was the first to be held physically after three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Most of our members missed having physical activities but we are still unable to hold outdoor activities due to the weather.”

Besides Pandu Puteri Kelip-Kelip, there are also the Pandu Puteri Tunas (Brownie Guides for girls aged nine to 12), Pandu Puteri Remaja (Junior Guides, ages 13 to 15), Pandu Puteri Renjer (Ranger Guides, ages 16 to 18) and Pandu Puteri Klover (Clover Guides, ages 18 to 30).

The gathering drew 165 Girl Guides, teachers and leaders who were briefed on training the Guides and other matters.

Also present were Penang Education Department Students’ Talent Development Unit deputy director Hafife Abdul Halim and district Girl Guides commissioners.
