FIVE hundred closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) system will be installed around the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) area within the next five years.
Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman said the city council aimed to instal at least 200 of the AI-enabled CCTV cameras by the end of this year.
“Currently, we have 100 cameras under MBJB but they are normal CCTV cameras.
“We will upgrade the existing ones and add another 400 over the next five years.
“This includes the 200 that are expected to be installed by the end of this year.
“The cameras will be equipped with facial and vehicle recognition technology, so we can better monitor the city,” he said.
He added that information from the cameras would be shared with enforcement agencies, including the police.
Mohd Noorazam said this to the media after the council’s full board meeting at Menara MBJB.
The mayor said MBJB would be forking out RM5mil a year for the operation and maintenance of the CCTV system as well as a command centre that would be set up at Menara MBJB in Bukit Senyum.
“Since technology is changing rapidly, we decided to rent the CCTV cameras instead of buying them, so that we can have them replaced when needed.
“The RM5mil encompasses the cost of setting up the CCTV system as well as the camera rental.
“We are setting up a command centre on the 15th floor of Menara MBJB.
“The command centre, which features dozens of screens fed by the AI-enabled CCTV cameras, is expected to be up and running by October,” he said.
Mohd Noorazam said MBJB had upgraded traffic lights under the smart traffic light system at 65 junctions this year.
“The upgrade was done in stages starting from 2020.
“To date, we have upgraded traffic lights at 202 junctions at a cost of RM9mil.
“The smart traffic light is equipped with a monitoring system that will be linked to the command centre at Menara MBJB.
“This means that the command centre will receive direct signals if the traffic lights are down, allowing repairs to be done quickly without needing someone to be on-site,” he said.
