Rep: Lack of civic-mindedness root of rubbish problem at old Seri Kembangan market

KDEB and Subang Jaya City Council cleaning up the old Seri Kembangan market site, which has become an illegal dumping ground.

Piles of rubbish have turned the old Seri Kembangan market on Jalan SK 10/3 and Jalan SK10/5 in Selangor into an eyesore.

In response to complaints from residents and traders, Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah visited the site and appealed to those responsible to think of the consequences of their actions.

“Looking at the rubbish at the scene, I see a mix of domestic as well as construction and commercial wastes such as those generated by restaurants, furniture factories and renovation work.

“It will be hard to pinpoint who the culprits are because of the absence of closed-circuit television camera here.

“Irresponsible parties are most likely dumping their rubbish here at night,” said Ean Yong.

When contacted, Subang Jaya councillor Teh Eng Teck said Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) as well as KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd were aware of the issue.

“MBSJ and KDEB had already carried out a clean-up on April 27.

“They foresee the problem may recur as the old market site is an open area.

“So, a suggestion was forwarded to put up hoarding to enclose the area.

“However, as it is a big area, the installation of hoarding will incur a substantial cost,” said Teh, adding that MBSJ needed time to get approval for the expenditure.

KDEB operation executive Mohamad Nasriq Mahd, who is in charge of rubbish collection for Seri Kembangan, said the second clean-up began on May 10.

“In the first round, we managed to clear 12 tons of rubbish in just one day.

“For the second round, however, there are rubbish piles inside and outside the building.

“By rough estimates, we will be dealing with 50 tons of rubbish this time,” he added.

The clean-up team, comprising 10 personnel from MBSJ and KDEB, will be focusing on the outer perimeter of the market site before working on the inside of the building.

“We have on site a compactor and four roll-on, roll-off bins with each having a maximum capacity of three tons.

“Due to the increased volume of rubbish, it will take several trips to clear the place.

“We estimate that it may take up to three days,” said Mohamad Nasriq.

The cost of the clean-up will be borne by MBSJ.

The old Seri Kembangan market is set to be torn down and a new one built as part of a three-year project.

In the meantime, the market traders were moved to a temporary site at Jalan SK 6/1 on April 17.
