‘Muallim has potential to attract tourists globally’

Mohd Ikram says Muallim has several attractions and products that could be further promoted to international tourists.

MUALLIM in Perak has the potential to be a global tourist destination.

Tanjung Malim District Council president Mohd Ikram Ahmad said the Muallim district has several attractions and products that could be further promoted to international tourists.

These include its food, extreme sport activities and various tourist spots.

“We have the famous pau (Chinese buns), nasi padang and other local fare.

“We also have activities like whitewater rafting and water abseiling as well as recreational parks,” he said during a townhall session at the district council office in Bandar Behrang.

“There are also historical tourism spots like the National Education Museum, Za’ba House and several World War II-related locations,” he added.

The townhall session, which was attended by local leaders, government agencies, non- governmental organisations, eco-tourism operators and community representatives, was to prepare Muallim for Visit Perak Year 2024.

It was held to discuss, share views and find solutions to current issues to enhance the tourism sector in Muallim.

Mohd Ikram said the tourism industry, which was a main contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) before the Covid-19 pandemic, was getting global attention again.

The tourism sector, he said, contributed about RM86bil or 13% to the country’s GDP through the 26 million international tourists who visited Malaysia in 2019.

He said promotional and publicity works would need to be stepped up while ensuring all the relevant products were prepared to welcome tourists.

“We will need to upgrade the infrastructure and facilities to welcome tourists,” he added.
