Business owners in Jinjang Selatan are upset that a newly renovated corner shoplot along Jalan Jambu Air Mawar in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur is taking up valuable space that can be used for parking.
Based on a notice prior to the renovation, business owners said the shoplot would be occupied by a health screening laboratory.
A tile shop owner who wanted to be known as Yap, 60, said there was ample parking space by the road before the shoplot, previously occupied by an insurance company, underwent renovations.
“The empty spaces have been taken up by the huge building facade,” said Yap.
“I foresee vehicles stopping to drop customers off at the centre and partially blocking the road when the laboratory is fully operational.
“Sometimes, motorists take about 30 minutes just to exit Jalan Jambu Air Mawar to get onto Jalan Kepong because of vehicles parked by the road,” he said at a press conference.
He said when questioned, contractors renovating the building told him they were merely following plans approved by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Kepong community activist Yee Poh Ping said DBKL should prioritise creating more parking bays in the area.
“Jinjang Selatan is an old area and the narrow roads can barely accommodate the large volume of traffic entering the commercial area.
“Parking space is scarce and now the newly renovated building is depriving visitors of space to park their vehicles,” he said.
Yee said he has raised the matter with the Kuala Lumpur mayor’s office and DBKL’s Infrastructure Planning Department.
“DBKL responded that it will investigate the matter.
“I hope the authorities can discuss with the building owner and get them to make the necessary rectifications,” he added.
