WORK to clean the Buntong wet market is conducted frequently to ensure that it is clean.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said Ipoh City Council workers clean the market on a daily basis while the rubbish collection point was cleaned twice a day.

“The city council always ensures that the market is in good condition for traders and visitors,” he said, adding that maintenance works at the market were being conducted in stages.

“We are also working towards resolving the stray dog issue there,” he added.

Rumaizi was responding to a letter titled “Market in Ipoh dirty and smelly” that was published in StarMetro on April 24.

In the letter, a reader had complained about the poor condition of the market.

Rumaizi said there was only one piped water outlet there exclusively for the use of council workers when cleaning the place.

“Traders are required to instal their own pipes,” he said.

On the lack of fans at the market, he said they were only available at the food court.

Rumaizi said market traders were required to use their own fans.

He said the city council had plans to rebuild the wet market but this would depend on allocations and sufficient funding.

“We ask for the cooperation of visitors to help ensure the cleanliness of all markets in the city,” he added.
