FOOD packs filled with essential items such as rice, cooking oil and sugar have been distributed to 1,257 poor families in the Ayer Hitam constituency in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the aid distribution was in its 19th year since he was elected in 2004.

“I am glad that this has become a tradition of ours to gather and assist those in need.

“I still remember back then, there were 845 recipients and this time round, it has increased to 1,257.

“This shows that we are reaching out to a wider audience to assist more people,” he said during an aid presentation ceremony in Ayer Hitam, Johor.

The MCA president also handed out cheques for financial assistance to 32 mosques and 95 surau within the parliamentary constituency for the festive season.

Before that, Dr Wee met 20 taxi drivers from the Bandar Baru Ayer Hitam Taxi Association and presented goodies to them.

“With the combined effort of Semarang assemblyman Datuk Samsolbari Jamali, Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon and myself, we aim to continue providing aid and services for the rakyat.

“I also hope the food packs can help lift their burden and add some cheer to their festive celebration,” Dr Wee added.
