THE late Iban community leader Penghulu Imban Medan is still remembered 51 years after he was killed by communists.
They shot him to death on Feb 25, 1972, at his longhouse, Rumah Balang Alau, for reporting them to the police in Sibu, Sarawak.
He had come to know of the communist hideout in Ulu Pakoh where they evaded soldiers after a battle in Kanowit.
Imban was bestowed with a posthumous “Dato” title at Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 86th birthday celebration in Miri in October last year.
In conjunction with Imban’s 51st death anniversary, a traditional Iban ceremony was held at Rumah Rose Nana at the Sekuau Resettlement Scheme.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang presented the framed “Dato” title to Imban’s granddaughter, Roseline Anthony Anjang.
Roseline thanked the Sarawak government for the award.
“My grandfather sacrificed for the people under his care.
“Before this award, a school was also named SK Penghulu Imban in his honour,” she said.
Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang was also grateful for the recognition.
“I would like to thank the Sarawak government for appreciating the services of Penghulu Imban.
“This is a good sign that the country recognises former fighters who supported the government against the communists,” he said.
