ORIENTAL Melaka Straits Medical Centre (OMSMC) organised a two-day event to raise awareness on the importance of kidney health, in conjunction with World Kidney Day.
Hospital chief executive officer Lee Soon Teck said kidney disease was a silent killer.
According to the 29th Report of the Malaysian Dialysis and Transplant Registry 2021, the number of prevalent dialysis patients had increased to 49,770 in 2021 from 26,480 in 2011.
Meanwhile, the number of new dialysis patients rose over the past 10 years from 6,045 in 2011 to 9,123 in 2021.
Lee said the hospital encouraged the public to be mindful of kidney disease prevention, especially those with hypertension and diabetes.
The event themed “Kidney Health For All” featured health talks by specialists, a fun demonstration and booth exhibitions.
OMSMC also offered a special kidney screening package for the first 100 participants who signed up for the event.
Besides the event, OMSMC, together with its sister company Star Life Pharma (SLP) owned by Oriental Holdings Bhd (OHB), continued their efforts in flood relief.
Donated items worth more than RM15,000 were handed to Segamat district council and a temporary relief centre at SK Batu Gajah Jasin.
Lee expressed his gratitude to the donors for their kindness and support in assisting the flood victims.
On March 6, OMSMC and SLP sent the first batch of items to Segamat.
