Preparing medical professionals for clinical practice

Forward NUMed is back to help young healthcare professionals gain broad exposure that will help them in their careers.

FORWARD NUMed is back to help young healthcare professionals prepare for a career in the medical industry.

Organised by Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), Forward NUMed Talk Series: Updates in Clinical Practice aims to provide doctors, house officers, MBBS graduates and medical students with a comprehensive understanding of clinical practice.

The half-day session at the university campus as well as online on March 4 will feature internal medicine and clinical practice experts who will discuss medical practices that the next generation of medical professionals should be aware of.

NUMed organising chairperson and chief operating officer Premila Nair said the talk would have invaluable lessons on how young doctors could handle clinical practices efficiently and what to expect.

Distinguished speakers from a diverse range of fields, including experts in medicine, education and medical law, will share their experience and knowledge of their respective fields of practice, highlight recommendations and/or updates that medical doctors may encounter during clinical practice as well as outline postgraduate medical pathways.

Monash University Malaysia Professor of Medicine (Clinical School) Prof GR Letchuman Ramanathan will speak on Overview of Parallel Pathway of Internal Medicine in Malaysia.

Since the second half of the 20th century, the parallel pathway has trained a number of prominent physicians who have contributed to the advancement of internal medicine in the country.

The revamped parallel pathway has added structure and flow for 48 months of training leading up to the six-month gazettement process.

Then NUMed’s honorary professor and consultant physician Prof Edmund Ong will discuss Top Tips for Passing MRCP Paces.

“Providing a thorough understanding of postgraduate medical diplomas such as the MRCP Paces examination and advice on how to pass it may be beneficial to aspiring medical practitioners,” said Premila.

And in a pivotal segment of the talk, Harikannan Ragavan, a partner at Jayadeep Hari and Jamil Advocates and Solicitors, will discuss medical law updates and how to avoid malpractice lawsuits.

This will ensure that medical practitioners understand how doctors should be extremely cautious in their professional careers and how mistakes can have a negative impact on one’s reputation.

Forward NUMed Talk Series: Updates in Clinical Practice is open to the public, with a limited number of seats available.

Participants need to register if interested and certificates of attendance will be provided.
