Beware of latest scam, Kajang business owners warned

SCAMMERS impersonating Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) officers are trying to cheat business owners in the municipality out of their money, on the pretext of renewing their business licences.

According to MPKj records, at least four attempts were made last month but luckily, no one fell victim.

MPKj president Najmuddin Jemain advised people not to fall for such scam tactics including the modus operandi of calling business licence holders on the phone to deposit money into individual bank accounts.

During the council’s full board meeting, Najmuddin said MPKj would not be liable for any loss of money due to scams.

“Do not entertain such calls and always deal directly with MPKj’s Licensing and Hawkers Department, or contact the Corporate Planning and Public Relations Department for clarification,” he said.

MPKj Corporate Planning and Public Relations Department director Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman said the scammers told business owners they could renew their licence for a period of three or five years at a discounted rate.

“The sum the scammers offered was lower than the fee fixed by MPKj for that period.

“Anyway, business licences can only be renewed on a yearly basis,” said Kamarul.

He said MPKj had never appointed a third party to conduct any business licence-related matters.

Kamarul advised the public to use the services at MPKj counters.
