COMMERCIAL crime cases in Sibu mostly involving scam cases reported an increase of 10.47% last year compared to 2021.

In 2022, the total number was 443, an increase from 359 in 2021.

The number of people arrested for commercial crime increased to 441 last year from 152 in 2021.

However, Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the total loss between the two years saw a decrease of 30%.

The loss reported in 2022 was RM7.5mil compared to RM11.6mil the previous year.

“The reduction in the amount of losses is a result of our efforts in bringing awareness to the community either through talks, media sharing, information through the Omnipresent campaign, and other campaigns especially about fraud crimes such as parcel scams, love scams, and non-existent loans,” said ACP Zulkipli at the Sibu Police 2023 Parade.

In addition, he said the overall occurrence of crime sprees in Sibu decreased in 2022 compared to previous years.

He attributed this to the strong commitment of the police force and public cooperation in fighting crime.

“I am proud of the excellent work shown by all of you in maintaining well-being, order and harmony in society.

“For example, you have shown unwavering discipline and commitment in the assignment of the 15th General Election and as a result, we managed to maintain a safe and peaceful atmosphere throughout the period,” said ACP Zulkipli.

He said the police also achieved its Key Performance Index (KPI) for 2022.

Zulkipli said for index crimes, 438 cases were reported in 2022 compared to 534 in 2021, a decrease of 17.98%.

As for violent crimes, he said 48 cases were reported in 2022, compared to 56 the previous year.

A total of 390 property crimes were reported in 2022 compared to 478 in 2021, a decrease of 18.41%.

“In an effort to combat the drug menace in Sibu in 2022, a total of 887 people were arrested compared to 594 in 2021.

“This shows an increase of 293 arrests.

“The value of drugs seized in 2022 also increased, which was RM1.56mil compared to RM364,786.85 in 2021.

“This year, we will continue to work hard to step up on arrests and operations to combat this activity,” he said.

As for road accidents, he said 1,766 cases were reported last year compared to 1,332 in 2021.

He added that there were 48 road accident fatalities in 2022 compared to 30 in the previous year.
