Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) aims to break a national record by holding the biggest ever Zumba dance at the state-level International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration.

PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng said they were targeting 10,000 participants to get into the Malaysia Book of Records.

She said there were not many public spaces for women to practise Zumba more than a decade ago.

“Now, they are willing to go out and claim their space. This is a small but important step.”

Ong said all state government-linked companies would be approached to send both men and women for the celebration to be held at the MBSP Stadium in Kepala Batas on March 11.

“The IWD is to honour women for their contributions to family, community and country,” she said.

She encouraged everyone to wear something purple on March 8 to mark IWD.

Komtar, she said, would be lit up in purple too.

“Individuals can also show their appreciation to the women around them, be they their mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, colleague or friend,” she added.

PWDC also plans to hold a forum at Dewan Millenium, Kepala Batas, featuring three personalities who will discuss how men and women can play their roles in embracing equity.

Ong said a carnival would be held as well on March 11 to showcase the products of about 200 to 300 women entrepreneurs in the state.
