A SPECIAL operations task force has been formed to manage waste collection in certain parts of the state following delays.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) in a statement said it formed the task force to rectify the issue with various teams assigned to carry out rubbish collection in affected areas.

“Personnel from MBPP’s Municipal Services Department, Engineering Department and Landscape Department MBPP are involved.

“They are working tirelessly, assisted by Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP),” MBPP said in a statement.

The city council thanked MBSP for sending six trash compactor machines as well as workers.

MBPP said there was disruption to rubbish collection in five places on the island – Pantai Jerejak and Batu Uban in Bayan Baru parliamentary constituency, as well as Seri Delima, Ayer Itam and Paya Terubong in Bukit Gelugor constituency.

“We have received complaints on delays in these areas.

“The new contractors appointed to provide the service from Jan 1 were unable to fulfil their responsibilities.

“We also found that the volume of domestic and commercial waste had increased throughout the holiday season.

“We have obtained 10 additional trash compactor trucks to collect waste in the affected areas.

“Workers have been asked to work overtime until this problem is resolved,” it said.

The council said the waste management centre in Batu Maung would operate full-time.

“The contractors will be working day and night until the situation returns to normal.”

The council also extended its apologies to the public for the inconvenience caused.
