AMPANG Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) will propose slope stabilisation solutions to residents affected by the Taman Halaman landslide in Ampang, Selangor, in a meeting soon.
Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail said MPAJ’s Engineering Department had been discussing short and long-term technical solutions to strengthen the slope in Jalan Halaman 6 which has failed twice in the span of a few weeks.
The last incident on the evening of Dec 9 saw the slope failing and damaging three houses.
Two houses were badly damaged – one was vacant while the other had six occupants, but no one was injured in the incident.
Rodziah said MPAJ had issued notices to nine house owners at risk to inform them of the danger of a slope failure incident.
“There are eight houses at the bottom of the slope and one on top of it.
“The residents have been advised to vacate their homes for the time-being,” she said.
Since it is private land, she said MPAJ could only suggest remedial measures.
“For now, we have cordoned off the area including the three damaged houses,” she said.
Rodziah said a similar incident took place on Nov 15 but affected just one house.
StarMetro had reported on the earlier landslide incident, where the kitchen and bedroom of a bungalow were damaged.
The occupants, which consisted of a married couple and their 11-year-old son, were unharmed.
“MPAJ did cut some trees following the incident, as a precautionary measure.
“There were no complaints on soil movement since that day.
“So, the landslide on Dec 9 came as a surprise.
“Maybe the rainy weather has worsened the soil condition,” she said.
Rodziah said Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department personnel would be on standby round-the-clock to monitor the situation and guard the damaged houses.
A check by StarMetro on Sunday afternoon at Jalan Halaman 6, found the houses were sealed off with yellow tape.
Canvas was used to cover the exposed part of the slope.
No residents from the neighbouring were seen outside.
Neither were personnel from MPAJ, the police or Fire and Rescue Department seen at the site.
A resident in Persiaran Desa Ampang 3, behind the hill, who only wanted to be known as Karim, 60, said landslides were common in the area.
“Luckily, the problem stopped several years ago after the slope was strengthened with concrete,” he added.
