SELANGOR Water Management Board (Luas) will continue its monitoring of state water sources following a pollution incident that originated from Negri Sembilan.
On Dec 1, pollution was detected at Sungai Pajam in Selangor following an incident in Sungai Batang Benar in Negri Sembilan that resulted in foam forming on the surface of the river.
Shutdown orders were issued for the Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants after sampling at the Jenderam Hilir water intake recorded an odour level of four TON (threshold odour number).
The Semenyih plant resumed operations after two hours and the Bukit Tampoi plant after six hours when odour levels returned to normal and water supply was not disrupted.
Selangor tourism, environment and green technology, Orang Asli affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian, in a statement said, no pollution was detected during a 12-hour observation of Sungai Pajam where pollutants were earlier detected.
Water samples tested by Luas and Air Selangor along Sungai Semenyih and surrounding areas including the Jenderam Hilir water intake until Saturday morning, showed no signs of pollution, he said.
“Monitoring ended at 6am on Dec 3 once there was no more risk to the operation of the two water treatment plants,” he said.
Hee added that water monitoring would continue for fear of a recurrence as the source of the river pollution from outside Selangor.
The source of the pollution, he said, was still under an investigation being conducted by Negri Sembilan water authorities.
