‘Psychological abuse main type of complaint received via SELamat helpline’

PSYCHOLOGICAL mistreatment was the most common complaint received through Talian SELamat, the Selangor government’s domestic abuse helpline.

State public health, unity and women, and family empowerment committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said since the inception of the helpline on Nov 1 last year until Sept 30 this year, a total of 53 cases were reported. All victims were women.

“From the total number of cases, 20 were psychological abuse with other types of abuse reported being child abuse (eight cases), physical abuse (seven) and economic abuse (six).

“There were also two cases with a combination of physical and psychological abuse, another two related to abuse of people with disabilities, one on elderly abuse and seven others were general queries,” she said.

Dr Siti Mariah said most of the cases were referred for counselling and to the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

“A total of 12 cases were referred for counselling and 10 to to JKM.

“Three cases were referred to the Legal Aid Department, seven to the police and two others were referred to the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency.

“Other referrals included one case each to the One Stop Crisis Centre, area service centre, Pusat Wanita Berdaya, which is the state’s women empowerment programme and shelter homes,” she added.

Dr Siti Mariah was replying to Juwairiya Zulkifli (PH-Bukit Melawati) who asked about the effectiveness of Talian SELamat.
