A MAJOR utility company and the property development arm of a conglomerate have entered into a strategic partnership to build stations for electric vehicle charging at the latter’s projects in Selangor.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) signed an agreement with Gamuda Land to develop Malaysia’s first electron stations at Gamuda Cove in the southern Klang Valley and Gamuda Gardens in northern Klang Valley for communities in the projects and visitors to the water theme park at Gamuda Cove.

The stations, slated to serve motorists by 2025, will accelerate the development of the ecosystem and infrastructure for electric vehicles (EV) in Malaysia.

The future electron stations will be powered by rooftop solar panels that will help offset usage of electricity from the grid.

The agreement was signed by TNB chief strategy and ventures officer Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan and Gamuda Land chief operating officer Chu Wai Lune at Gamuda Cove’s Experience Gallery.

It was witnessed by TNB programme management office programme director Mohd Junaizee Mohd Noor and Gamuda Land product management unit executive director Jess Teng.

These electric car charging stations will be compatible with all vehicle makes ranging from hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully EVs and include both AC and DC fast chargers.

Just like conventional petrol stations, the electron stations will have services such as food and beverage outlets as well as convenience stores to serve motorists as they wait for their vehicles to be charged.

Megat Jalaluddin said the MoU would pave the way for TNB and Gamuda Land to collaborate towards encouraging the usage of electric vehicles in Malaysia and achieving Malaysia’s net-zero emissions aspiration by 2050.

“Supporting electric vehicle proliferation is part of TNB’s energy transition pillars.

“It is the right step forward in realising a sustainable master plan which features climate- responsive design, integrated transport and super-low energy buildings with smart features.

“All of these initiatives will require substantial investments and no individual entity will be able to shoulder this responsibility alone.

“Therefore, this cooperation between TNB and Gamuda Land is very much in line with supporting the government’s vision,” he added.

Chu said, “Urban transportation contributes 23% of carbon emissions, so naturally, ensuring our developments are equipped with facilities to support sustainable modes of urban transportation is one of our key focuses towards developing smart and sustainable townships.

“The electron stations will complement our carbon reduction efforts such as having dedicated tree-lined pathways for cycling and walking and having e-trams in our townships as an alternative mode of transportation for our community.”

Under the agreement, both companies will also be working on the exploration of other sustainable energy initiatives in Gamuda Land’s townships.
