LINDSEY Santa Maria drew on the fighting spirit of his Portuguese ancestors who conquered Melaka in 1511, to capture the inaugural British Pools championship singles title.

The 58-year-old Santa Maria stormed back from the losers’ pool to emerge champion at the contest held at the Studio 42 Pub and Restaurant in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
