PUPILS from eight primary schools in the Sri Aman, Lubok Antu and Betong districts in Sarawak learned about caring for the environment through storytelling.
The creative learning session, which included electrical safety talks, was organised by Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) in partnership with district education offices and KEC International (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, which has been contracted to work on the Sri Aman-Serudit transmission lines.
The pupils were from SK Kem Pakit, SK Nanga Klassen, SK Engkilili No 2, SK Sedarat, SK Kem Skrang, SK Nanga Enteban, SK Bartholomew and SK Nanga Ajau.
During the session at SK Engkilili No 2, 16 pupils took turns to tell stories in Bahasa Malaysia.
The stories were based on the themes of Say No to Straws; Zero Waste and Picking Up Litter; Reuse, Reduce and Recycle; and Save Water/Clean Water.
SEB health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) senior vice-president Marconi Madai said the programme was part of the company’s initiatives to emphasise the importance of environmental and safety stewardship.
“Safety awareness and environmental conservation should be our shared responsibility.
“We believe it is important to build awareness in the community and this programme targets the younger generation to share how we can all play our part to secure a sustainable future,” he said.
Marconi added that SEB was working with stakeholders to roll out its corporate tree planting and habitat restoration programme.
SEB’s HSSE general manager Robin Tigai said it was encouraging to see the pupils’ enthusiasm during the programme.
He said everyone could take small steps to incorporate green practices in their daily lives, such as bringing their own water bottles, not littering and reducing the use of plastic.
“I hope this programme has been an enlightening one and the pupils will be able to share with their families and friends what they have learned about stewardship towards the environment,” he added.
