More Chinese schools needed in Segambut, says MP

SEGAMBUT needs more Chinese schools to accommodate the growing number of students in the constituency, said its MP.

Hannah Yeoh said there were currently only two Chinese schools in Segambut, namely SJK (C) Kepong 3 and SJK (C) Kai Chee, each having around 2,000 pupils.

“Every year, I get requests for support letters from parents who cannot secure placement for their child due to the overwhelming number of applications to these schools.

“There is also a growing number of non-Chinese students enrolling at such schools and this trend is expected to continue,” she said.

Yeoh said the lack of placements meant many parents had to send their children to schools in Jinjang Utara instead.

“But this is an inconvenience as they have to travel farther to send and pick up their children.

“The Chinese community places heavy emphasis on education, and as a result, gives great support to these schools,” she said, adding that she had written to Education Ministry about building another school in the area.

Yeoh said this after a mock cheque presentation ceremony at the Kuan Yin Temple in Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong.

The 40-year-old house of worship received RM30,000 to carry out facility upgrades and organise cultural and community events.

The temple is raising funds to undertake several infrastructure upgrades worth RM3mil, inclusive of building an auditorium.

Other structures planned include a 5.5m-high Guanyin stone statue, 12 Chinese zodiac statues and fence columns, among others.

Temple committee secretary Chia Ang Kee said the temple served the residents of Bandar Menjalara, Taman Sri Sinar, Taman Sri Bintang and Taman Sri Segambut.

“For those who donate above RM1,000, their names will be engraved on a board that will be put up in the temple,” he added.
