MORE proactive measures will be adopted by the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) in dealing with overgrown trees and branches in its jurisdiction.

Its president Natazha Hariss said currently, trees were being trimmed or removed from the site following public complaints.

“Priority now is given to emergency cases, when a tree has fallen or when we receive complaints from the public.

“We take immediate action in such cases.

“However, moving forward, we want to take more proactive measures to prevent such incidents altogether,” he said when met after the MPKu full board meeting.

“Starting next year, MPKu will ensure that the trees, especially mature ones, are regularly trimmed and maintained to prevent them from falling or inviting public complaints,” he said, adding that it was the right time for such action.

Natazha also said that the council was prepared to face the flood season and several flood hotspots have been identified.

“Among flood-prone areas in Kulai are Sengkang, Taman Aman and Taman Jaya Sepakat.

“Based on the data we received last year, Kulai is among districts that are least affected by floods.

“We hope the flood situation will not worsen this year, but we are prepared anyway,” he said, adding that most of the flood incidents in the district were flash floods with the water receding after five or six hours.

Natazha said among ongoing flood prevention measures were water catchment maintenance at flood-prone Taman Aman.

“The Mentri Besar has also announced that the state government will assist local councils in expanding their water catchment areas.

“We hope this will reduce the impact of heavy rain,” he said.

Earlier, during the full board meeting, Natazha said 20 community halls have been listed as temporary relief centres for flood victims.

“As per our disaster action plan, MPKu has made sure that the halls to be used for flood relief centres, which total 20, have been prepared.

“Nine of them are for the Bukit Permai Zone, six for Bukit Batu Zone and five for Senai Zone,” he said, adding that of the 20 halls, five were under the supervision of MPKu and have been gazetted as relief centres.

The five halls are in Taman Senai Utama, Taman Senai Baru, Taman Mewah, Kampung Baru Sengkang and Kampung Melayu Sedenak.
