SPORTS is a good medium to connect with youths and build a stronger sense of community, said Mohd Hairi Mad Shah.
The Johor youth, sports, entrepreneur development, cooperatives and human resources committee chairman said the state had given RM20,000 to each of the 56 constituencies to run sports events under the Bangsa Johor Sports Carnival programme.
“The funds, disbursed via the Johor Sports Council (MSNJ), was handed over to the offices of assemblymen.
“As for the constituencies held by Opposition parties, the allocation was given to the state’s constituency special coordination committees (JKPD).
“We hope to attract more youths to the carnival’s four categories which are sepak takraw, 3-on-3 basketball, netball and futsal.
“Besides building a stronger interest in sports, we hope the programme can encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle,” he said after handing over the funds to the assemblymen and representatives.
“The council is targeting 1,848 participants.
“They will represent their constituencies in the two-day Bangsa Johor Sports Carnival in Muar on Oct 15 and 16,” he added.
Meanwhile, MSNJ director Nor Syazlan Abd Razak said the council aimed to scout for new sporting talents at the carnival.
“The categories were chosen because the sports are popular.
“The programme kicked off in 2019 and we aim to make it an annual event,” he said. – By YEE XIANG YUN
