MORE than 300 housewives in Taman Kemuyang, Sibu, have joined the police’s Amanita squad programme to help boost security in the area.

The neighbourhood with a population of 5,000 was adopted by the Amanita squad in a bid to reduce crime.

Speaking at the launch, Sarawak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri hoped that with the cooperation of residents, Amanita Taman Kemuyang would have a positive impact.Amanita was created in March 2013 for women, especially housewives, to be the eyes and ears of the police to gain information on unreported criminal activities within communities.

“Housewives can be very helpful in passing on information because they are usually at home and aware of developments in their neighbourhood,” said Comm Azman.

The selection criteria for the programme is based on the crime index of an area, as well as good cooperation given to the police over the years.

Comm Azman said although crime in Taman Kemuyang was under control, Amanita would be used as a platform to encourage vigilance among housewives and other residents. He hoped the programme would boost the public’s confidence and make them feel safer.
